Bellflower real estate is often considered part of the culturally diverse A-B-C"" region, formed by Bellflower and neighboring Artesia and Cerritos. The city's 77,000 residents are 42 percent Latino, 46 percent white. Bellflower, with a population of 73,000, is bordered by Downey on the north and northwest, Norwalk and Cerritos on the east, Lakewood on the south, Long Beach on the southwest, and Paramount on the west.
The city, named from the French words belle fleur, a variety of apple tree, was settled by dairy farmers who made Bellflower into a milk production center. Around World War II, rising property values forced farmers out. Yet until the 1960s, Bellflower Boulevard, the city's main thoroughfare, stood as a thriving commercial strip but has faced competition from area malls and growing communities.
Bellflower features several organizations dedicated to musical pursuits. The Bellflower Symphony Association offers concert at the Bellflower Civic Center. The Bellflower Civic Chorus also offers regular concerts as does the Bellflower Community Concert Association. The city also offers a wide variety of recreational activities including tennis, dancing and activities for senior citizens. The privately-owned Hollywood sports park is a complex for skateboarding, BMX bikes, basketball, rock climbing, and paintball. The paintball areas feature four fields for scenario play and several speed ball fields.
Bellflower provides ongoing events to engage residents such as the Liberty Day Parade, the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast and Halloween carnivals.
Bellflower is served by the Bellflower Unified School District. Many of the schools have scored well on the Academic Performance Index. Out of a possible 1,000 points, the Albert Baxter Elementary School scored 826, Las Flores Elementary School scored 810, and Mayfair High School scored 755.
