Boyle Heights Neighborhood

Boyle Heights is a suburb of Los Angeles, known for its predominantly Latino population. Boyle Heights is an urban, well-developed area that began as an independent, out-of-town location for working-class families, a tradition it carries to this day. It has always been a largely immigrant neighborhood, and as such is filled with shops, restaurants, and small businesses of a decidedly multi-cultural nature. Its location, history, and property values make Boyle Heights homes a more affordable place to live than downtown LA.

Boyle Heights Schools & Libraries

With almost two dozen elementary schools and six prominent high schools, Boyle Heights offers young families an incredible array of options when it comes to education. Many of these schools are Catholic or multi-lingual as well, allowing the children of recent immigrants to obtain a full and worthwhile education in their native language. There are also a number of community colleges in the area, enabling working-class moms and dads to expand their skill set and get the sort of high-paying jobs they might need if they intend to send their children to college. Boyle Heights also has eight public libraries and has been the birthplace of many of LA’s most prominent Latino politicians and businessmen.

Boyle Heights Community & Housing

Boyle Heights has a prominent Catholic community, although there are also several synagogues in addition to Protestant and Eastern Orthodox churches, promoting the family-oriented nature of the suburb. The prevalence of large families in the area is evidenced by the fact that Boyle Heights has the lowest median age in all of LA, a youthful average of 25. Boyle Heights is connected to downtown LA by roads, trains, and buses, making commuting in and out of the city easy. Most of the housing in Boyle Heights consists of multi-family dwellings, from duplexes and row-houses to large apartment complexes. There are, however, a few larger houses, although there are no grand villas, mansions, or any other high-cost luxury single-family dwellings. Well-heeled locals choose instead to own condominiums, and a number of high-end condominiums are available. More moderately priced ones are also on the market, for those who prefer owning to renting.

The heavy Latino population of Boyle Heights means that it is very friendly to recent immigrants with large families. Many signs are bilingual, and the vast majority of services are provided in both English and Spanish. The vast majority of local businesses are owned by Latinos and cater to Latino culture and tradition. Mexican restaurants, bars, and groceries are omnipresent, as are traditional sources of entertainment and leisure. Soccer is more common in the town’s omnipresent parks than football or basketball, and a number of municipal and local soccer leagues routinely compete on weekends.
