The Fairfax District is a central Los Angeles neighborhood known for being the historic center of the Los Angeles Jewish community. A mixture of residential and commercial properties, it was originally populated by a small number of middle-class Jewish families until the 1940s. After the conclusion of WWII, the neighborhood swelled with shops, open market stalls and delis, some of which are still preserved in The Grove. The majority of these new businesses were founded by Jewish immigrants from central and Eastern Europe, and a strong European influence remains in the architecture and cuisine of the area. A few notable kosher delis and restaurants also remain, most notably Canter's. The neighborhood is home to no less than twelve synagogues, four of which are almost as old as Los Angeles itself.
Swelling wealth and prosperity accumulated throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s led to increased quality of life in the neighborhood, and the rapid availability of highly trained, hardworking young professionals influenced many entertainment businesses to place branch offices or small studios. Most notable is CBS's "Television City," home to "The Price is Right" and filming ground for most of CBS's most historic sitcoms and talk shows. The neighborhood is also home to The Improv, a stage comedy theater which served as the springboard and starting point for many of LA's famous stand- up comedians.
Abundant property tax revenue has been reinvested in flourishing public programs, including Fairfax High School and the Fairfax branch of the Los Angeles Public Library System. The Fairfax district is also home to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, one of the foremost medical centers in the United States. Additionally, Fairfax is home to Bet Tzedek Legal Services – The House of Justice, a Jewish-run legal aid society which provides free legal aid to over two million Los Angeles residents.
