Owners of Northeast Los Angeles property say they aren’t just saving money, but time. The commute to downtown Los Angeles job is much shorter, that’s a fact. Entertainment industry professionals say their ride to major studios is also reduced. With extra time on their hands, residents have the chance to watch sunsets and enjoy some of the best views of the Los Angles nighttime cityscape available from anywhere in the entire city. They also revel in cultural activities in up-and-coming areas like Eagle Rock.
Northeast Los Angeles Location
Northeast Los Angeles includes the communities of Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mount Washington, Glassell Park, Sycamore Grove, Garvanza, Montecito Heights, Cypress Park, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, Monterey Hills, and Hermon. These communities are flanked by Glendale to the west, Glenoaks Canyon to the north, Pasadena to the northeast, and downtown Los Angeles to the southwest.
The three best-known neighborhoods, Eagle Rock, Mount Washington, and Highland Park boast a population of about 82,000. The Metro Gold Line from Union Station to Pasadena, which traverses part of the area offers scenic views of its parks, hills, and valleys.
Northeast Los Angeles CA Beginnings
Most of Northeast Los Angeles was part of the original Spanish grant when the city incorporated in 1850. One of the first annexations of the city was the city of Highland Park in 1895. Other cities in Northeast Los Angeles were annexed soon after.
Examples include Garvanza (1899), Eagle Rock (1911), and Arroyo Seco (1912), among others. Temple Beth Israel of Highland Park and Eagle Rock opened in 1923 and is now the second oldest synagogue in Los Angeles. From the late 1950s until the 1980s, Highland Park and Eagle Rock were known as a hub for Hot Rod builders. Parts of the region increasingly became a Latino enclave in the 1960s but other groups kept the area mixed.
Unfortunately, many historic homes were razed in Highland Park in the 1950s and 1960s. New residents, attracted by Northeast Los Angeles real estate prices and its ethnic mix, arrived in the early 2000s. The area has increasingly attracted hip shops and eateries.
Northeast Los Angeles Recreation & Amenities
The Arroyo Arts Collective joins artists, poets, musicians, and creative people in the area. It has offered tours of artists' homes in Highland Park, Eagle Rock, and Mount Washington. The annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, founded more than a decade ago, is anticipated by owners of Northeast Los Angeles homes all year long. The San Antonio Winery in Lincoln Heights, the last remaining winery in Los Angeles, offers free tours. The Brewery Arts Complex often hosts open gallery days. Lincoln Park offers numerous concerts and cultural presentations.
Northeast Los Angeles Schools
Eagle Rock Elementary School is considered one of the rare gems of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school scored 847 of a possible 1,000 points on the state’s Academic Performance Index.
