Westlake is bordered by downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, the Santa Monica Freeway (10) to the south, Koreatown to the west, Virgil Village to the north and Echo Park to the north east, across the Hollywood Freeway.
Westlake in the 1920s looked much like the Upper Eastside of Manhattan, replete with wealthy businessmen who commuted to downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. Its less affluent northeastern blocks were home to a large Filipino population that remains today. Much of its white population left when streetcars lines were removed in the 1950s and were replaced by Mexican-Americans who later left in the 1970s. The community’s large mansions were cut into apartments and residential hotels. In the 1980s, many Salvadoran and Guatemalan immigrants moved in to be near service sector jobs in the downtown.
Westlake is known for the Belmont Tunnel, a canvas for graffiti artists, as well as the historic Bob Baker Marionette theater, the longest running puppet theater in the United States. It also includes numerous culinary landmarks such as Langer Deli, a Jewish eatery, the first location of Mexican chain restaurant, El Pollo Loco and the first Tommy’s Hamburger restaurant.
The Los Angeles Unified School District serves the area with schools including the Logan Street Elementary School, Mayberry Elementary Schol, Thomas Starr King Middle School and Belmont High School. Downtown Magnets School offers focuses in fashion, business and electronics.
