The section of Los Angeles now known as "Little Ethiopia" is a small section of Ethiopian shops, businesses, and residences in the Carthay residential district. Originally known as "South Fairfax" or "SoFax," it was home to Jewish businesses and residents until the late 1980s. Many Ethiopian and Eritrian African immigrants flocked to the area during the 1990s due to the low rents, abundance of restaurants and small shops for sale during the recession of the early 90s, and cultural tolerance of the neighbors. In the past two decades, Little Ethiopia has grown to be one of the most significant centers of Ethiopian culture and cuisine on the west coast.

Little Ethiopia, like many immigrant-based communities, is primarily urban, bilingual, and focused on small business and residence. The vast majority of residents live and work in the neighborhood or surrounding areas, taking advantage of Carthay's abundant sidewalks to avoid the expense of owning a car. A large number of small restaurants, groceries, and import stores have sprung up to meet local demand for Ethiopian goods, cuisine, and cultural events. The homes in Little Ethiopia are primarily single-family units, and local real estate agents specialize in finding affordable housing for recent immigrants and helping them through the nuanced complexities of American homeownership.

Little Ethiopia is part of the Los Angeles school district and has, in recent years, been part of the elementary-school level magnet program in an effort to improve school quality, decrease class size, and enhance the learning of local students. English as a second language has been encouraged, and classes are provided for both children and adults. All residents are zoned for Cochran Middle School and Los Angeles High School, both of which are considered schools of exceptional quality due to a long pedigree of excellent teaching and solid funding.
