Hawthorne History
Hawthorne, once occupied by the Shoshonian Indians, was part of a Sausal Redondo, named after a round clump of willows in the area. In 1887 several groups of investors, encouraged by the construction of a railroad being built, purchased large amounts of towns. One of these was the Hawthorne Land Company, which advertised Hawthorne as the town between the city and the sea.
By 1907 Hawthorne had grown to a thriving little town of over one hundred homes. It was incorporated in 1922. In 1939 the Northrop Grumman Corporation, as it is now known, moved to Hawthorne, drawing other companies seeking subcontracts.
With the growth of the aviation industry and the subsequent aerospace industry, Hawthorne became known as the Cradle of Aviation and enjoyed a boom for many years in both jobs and real estate. The plant closed in the late 1990s.
Recreation & Amenities
Hawthorne's 85,000 residents enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities offered by the city, as well as ample shopping opportunities from major retailers. While the loss of the aviation industry has hurt, the city has sprung back with investments from retailers. These include Costco, Best Buy and Sports Authority. In addition, the city has invested heavily in recreation. It maintains ten parks, including a skatepark, and a pool with a city swim team that practices year round. The city also offers space in its community garden to any resident who wishes to plant there.
Hawthorne operates a 20-acre camp facility in the Angeles National Forest of the San Bernardino Mountains in Wrightwood. The facility is available for rental for families or large groups. Enclosed cabins are used for sleeping areas, while cooking & dining is held in a main lodge area. Groups provide their own transportation, food, & bedding.
