La Puente is located 20 miles east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. It is bordered by Hacienda Heights and Whittier to the South, El Monte and South El Monte to the West, West Covina to the north and Walnut to the east.
While eighty-three percent of the city is Latino, the city has a small-town feel that is quite American. There's adult basketball leagues, an annual Halloween festival, running races in the downtown and city-run flag football games.
La Puente, which means bridge in Spanish, was named after a bridge built across the San Jose Creek by members of the Portola-Serra expedition in 1769, as they surveyed the region for Spain. A rendering of the bridge can be seen in the City's colorful seal. La Puente homes multiplied after 1841 when European settlers arrived by wagon train from New Mexico and obtained title to the large 48,000 acre Rancho La Puente.
During the 1930's, the area was famous for its fruit and walnut groves. The largest walnut packing plant in the world was located in the city. Now La Puente real estate is largely residential. The community began in 1841 when John Rowland and William Workman developed the land.
La Puente real estate includes many 1950s-era strip malls, some of which include ethnic eateries that serve excellent dishes. The city conducts many events, as well as featuring numerous parks.
Sunshine Park, named by a first grader in a citywide contest, offers an after school club, Aztec Dance Classes, Baile Folklorico, Classes, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading and a Tiny Tot Adventure Zone, among other things. This 10,500 square foot facility exists to provide a safe place for seniors to participate in activities and services that allow them to socialize with their peers, contribute to their community, and continue to be mentally and physically active, healthy and vital. Seniors can receive nutritious meals and participate in educational and recreational activities, dances, and excursions.
The Hacienda La Puente School District serves homes in La Puente as well as the City of Industry, Hacienda Heights, and portions of Valinda and West Covina.
