Watts is known as an African-American community, but in the past two decades, more and more Latino immigrants have come to to the city. At the same time, leaders have used the six-decades-old, unique Watts Towers to shine up the city’s image. An artistic creation, the 17 structures that reach as 99 feet, have become an increasing source of pride in Watts as they draw visitors and artists to the city. Watts property is flanked by South Gate on the east, Lynwood on the southeast, Willowbrook on the south and Florence on the north.
From far away, Watts real estate can be seen by its unique calling card: Watts Towers, a series of 17 structures of metals, cements, chipped dishes, and bits of glass. The towers, which reach as high as 99 feet, have become a point of community for owners of Watts property. The structures attract artists and professionals to the area and to the adjacent Watts Towers Arts Center. Watts is known as an African-American community, but since the 1980s, more and more immigrants, primarily from Mexico and Central America, have come to the city. There are also others from Ethiopia and India.
The Metro Blue Line cuts through the city and provides transportation to downtown Los Angeles. Ted Watkins Memorial Park, named after a labor leader, offers baseball, flag football, basketball, soccer and swimming as well as after school programs. The 109th Street Recreation Center also offers baseball, basketball, football, indoor and outdoor gyms, and soccer.
