West Adams is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles and as such, it is near the historic center and is home to many of the city's most famous and notable buildings. Constructed between 1880 and 1930, the vast majority of these buildings are of the Victorian and Craftsman style, due to the popularity of these styles among Los Angeles's early elite. Notable examples include the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library and the Stimson House. While more modern houses and apartment complexes have been constructed, West Adams homes tend to be of traditional style and construction, with brick or stone exteriors and hardwood interiors. This has contributed to the beauty and longevity of the homes within the neighborhood.
When racially restrictive covenants were ruled unconstitutional in the late 1940s, the neighborhood became popular among Hollywood's African American entertainment elite. Little Richard, Hattie McDaniel and Joe Louis all owned homes within the neighborhood. Ray Charles chose West Adams as the home of his recording studio, and many local streets and businesses still bear his name. Additionally, the age and beauty of West Adams homes has led to their use in a number of television programs and films, most notably documentaries and docu-dramas about the famous stars who once lived (or still live) in the area.
The area is bisected by both the Harbor and Santa Monica freeways. While these freeways unfortunately destroyed some of the large historic homes in the area, they increased the ease by which local residents commute to and from the neighborhood. Efforts have been made to ensure the noise of the freeway does not pollute the neighborhood. Additionally, as of 2011, the Metro Expo train line has been extended into the neighborhood. This, along with abundant bus lines and sidewalks, has been promoted as a "green" and "congestion-free" method of getting to and from the neighborhood.
West Adams is a racially and socially diverse community, with Caucasians, African Americans, Latinos and Asians living side-by-side in West Adams homes. Local realtors and real estate agents offer a diverse array of housing options intended to reach out to the vast majority of income and comfort levels. The area is served by over two-dozen local schools, most notably Adams Middle School and West Adams Preparatory High School. Currently, the neighborhood is experimenting with a charter school program. Efforts made by the community have ensured that the area is beautiful, that the schools are well-funded and high-quality, and that crime is low.
