Vibrant new heart of Los Angeles -- its all happening in DTLA!!
Imagine a wide range of stores and restaurants or maybe great sushi in Little Toyko. A walk through the city’s historical building that date back to the late 1800s. The amenities in close proximity make Downtown Los Angeles property listings attractive to potential buyers. The University of Southern California, the downtown area’s largest employer is just a few minutes away.
Downtown Los Angeles real estate is east of West Lake and Mid-Wilshire, west of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, north of Los Angeles proper, and south of Los Feliz and Hollywood. The area is served by the Metro Blue, Red and Gold Lines as well as commuter trains that run through California.
In 1781, 44 settlers founded “El Pueblo de La Reina de Los Angeles,” The town of the Queen of Angels. By the 1880s, a land boom drew midwesterners to the area and businesses such as the Biltmore Hotel, came to the downtown. The city’s limit on building height was lifted in 1957, encouraging the development of skyscrapers. Nonetheless, many businesses left the area, attracted to business parks and malls elsewhere. In the mid 1990s, developers began renovating many of the historic buildings for residential use. The Downtown Center Business Improvement District founded in 1998 continues to work to make the area a great place to live, work and play.
The district’s “purple patrol” is a team of safety and maintenance officers who assist those who work, live and visit the area.
Downtown Los Angeles real estate benefits from an increasing number of restaurants, among them dozens opening in the past year. There are chains like Morton’s The Steakhouse and McCormick and Schmick’s but more prevalent are unique eateries like Roy’s Hawaiian fusion, Smeraldi’s at the Biltmore, The Restaurant at the Standard and the Water Grill. New services include a pilates studio and dog walking. Unusual events about such as last summer’s rooftoop Science Fiction Film series on the roof of the Westin Bonaventure. Residents can also enjoy walking tours of Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Civic Center area and Bunker Hill.
Downtown Los Angeles is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. The jewel of the area is the Central Los Angeles High School #9 with a focus on dance, music, theater and visual arts. The school, which cost $238 million, opened in 2009.
