Echo Park, Los Angeles Real Estate
The real estate market of Echo Park comprises a variety of styles and home types, including both historic builds and new construction properties. Much like the surrounding neighborhoods of east-central Los Angeles, Echo Park is an affluent area, with homes selling comfortably in the luxury price bracket.
With a range of property types, Echo Park suites an assortment of buyers. Single-family homes for sale suit the needs of families, whilst the condos (a more affordable option with a number of listings available on the market) appeal to professionals and/or couples. Additionally, Echo Park appeals to investors, with a significant portion of the properties in this neighborhood being multi-family homes, perfect for generating income.
Single-family homes are usually bungalows, although there are certainly multi-story properties to be found, as well. Condos and multi-family properties have height restrictions, something that is always under debate for new builds. As a whole, buildings in the community sit quite low, dotting the hilly areas of the neighborhood. There are some planned mid-rise condos for the neighborhood, each sitting at 5 stories in height.
When it comes to design and architecture, Echo Park is a mixture of new construction and historic homes. A number of the homes in this neighborhood were built in the early 20th century, and depending on the year of construction, are typically either Craftsman or Spanish style. New homes for sale (especially true of the condos and rental properties) take on Spanish style architecture primarily. Custom homes, however, tend to be more modern, usually Contemporary, although traditional elements are often used in the home's design—stucco exteriors being a popular choice.

Echo Park Beginnings
Echo Park is flanked by Benton Way to the West, Riverside Drive to the North, Elysian Park to the east, and Beverly Boulevard to the south. Echo Park actually refers to an area that includes other neighborhoods: Angelino Heights, Colton Hill, Edendale, Elysian Heights, Temple-Beaudry and Sunset Heights.
In the late 1800s, neighboring Echo Park attracted homebuyers who took advantage of street cars that took residents to downtown Los Angeles. Originally called Edindale before the creation of the Echo Park Lake, the area was home to the film industry before studios moved to Hollywood before World War I.
Echo Park was a middle class neighborhood yet it attracted a creative, independent-minded set of residents attracted by its reasonable prices. Poetry and literature readings have been an Echo Park tradition since the early 1920s. Today, Echo Park homes include a significant Latino immigrant population.
Echo Park Recreation & Amenities
Echo Park hosts the annual Lotus Festival in the fall. The park’s lake was at one time said to contain the largest planting of lotuses outside Asia. The park also features a Cuban festival commemorating the birthday of Cuban poet Jose Marti. A statute of the poet stands in the park.
Unique shops and restaurants include Barragan’s Mexican restaurant, the Echo Curio Curiosity Shop and Art Gallery and the Echo Park Film Center. The film center includes classes and frequently offers film festivals. Restaurants include Barragan’s, a historic location with Mexican food that draws diners from around the Los Angeles, as well as places like The Park, which speaks to the increasing gentrification of the neighborhood with dishes such as cornmeal pancakes with seared shrimp and chipotle butter.
Schools & Education in Echo Park
The Los Angeles Unified School District serves Echo Park homes with the Logan Street Elementary School, Mayberry Elementary School, Thomas Starr King Middle School and Belmont High School. Downtown Magnets School offers focuses in fashion, business and electronics.
