Compton Background
Compton real estate offers the chance for families to make homes at affordable prices. The neighborhood public schools are scoring higher every year. City programs give kids the opportunity to play basketball, soccer and flag football within minutes of their Compton homes.
Thirty families settled in Compton in 1867 after leaving Stockton where they could not make money in the Goldrush. Twenty-one years later, they had incorporated the area. The area grew with the development of Compton Airport and Compton Junior College in the 1920s. African-American families began to move to the city in the 1950s. Douglas Dollarhide became the city's first African-American mayor in the 1960s. While the city transformed 1,500 acres of unused land into an industrial park, it also welcomed a new transit center that serves the surrounding area.
