Located only a few miles from Los Angeles itself, Maywood is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County, with approximately 30,000 residents. Primarily a suburban and industrial city, it enjoys the pleasant weather and broad plains of the Los Angeles area without the congestion of Los Angeles itself. It has thus had a long history of housing industrial, blue-collar families. It is a city consisting primarily of single-family homes, although local real estate agents specialize in condominiums and apartments as well.

Maywood has recently undergone a rather unique revolution by becoming the first city in America to completely outsource its public services. Faced with a decreasing tax base, endemic management problems, and a history of shortcomings, in 2010 Maywood outsourced all of its city services, from trash collection to the police and fire departments to private companies. This move has been praised by many fans of privatization and deregulation and has largely been credited with an increase in the effectiveness and quality of city services within Maywood. Additionally, the use of privatized city workers, who are not unionized and work with lower wages and benefits, has helped Maywood maintain a much lower tax base, which is passed on to its citizens through lower property and sales taxes.

Additionally, Maywood has become a "Sanctuary City" which does not discriminate against illegal immigrants, nor do they enforce unduly restrictive or generally unfair terms upon such persons. With a population that is approximately 97% Latino, Maywood has stood against both the state and federal government on certain immigration policies, and has focused on family health, Americanization and multiculturalism instead. This has led to a flourishing of the Latino community in Maywood, with immigrants from all over central and south America flocking to the town for jobs, housing, and the opportunity to start an American family. As such, many local organizations and realtors are eager to work in a bilingual manner, assisting new immigrants with the complexities of American property ownership.

Despite being a solidly blue-collar town, Maywood is amply supplied with parks, schools, and other quality-of-living services. With two major parks and one minor, Maywood has a surprising amount of green space, with plenty of opportunities for residents to enjoy a soccer game, walk their dogs, or just get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Maywood is also home to a large number of elementary, middle, and high schools, giving parents a wide array of options in terms of where they feel their children will be best educated. The public schools, now privatized, are supplemented by a number of private religious and secular schools, increasing school choice for parents. Local libraries and educational institutions also offer a number of bilingual and English as Second Language courses to help new residents increase their employability.
