More About South Gate
The city offers a wide variety of stores, plus specialty shops that cater to the city's significant Latin American immigrant population. Ninety-two percent of the city's residents speak Spanish with only 13 percent speaking English in South Gate. Affordable South Gate homes average less than $300,000 in price.
South Gate, which spans 7.5 square miles, is located nearly in the middle of a square created by four freeways: the Long Beach Freeway (710), the Glen Anderson Freeway, (105), the Harbor Freeway, (110) and the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5). The city is flanked by Cudahy to the east, Huntington Park to the north, Inglewood to the west and Lynwood to the South.
South Gate History
Once inhabited by Gabrielino/Tongva Indians, Spanish settlers converted it into Rancho San Antonio, filled with cattle, orchards, and dairies. In 1917, realtor Charles B. Hooper brought prospective buyers to the area by picking them up on buses in various locations. By the end of 1918, 125 houses had been constructed. In 1923, the city was incorporated as South Gate, a name that refers to it as a southern entrance to Los Angeles. Once a white, blue-collar community, South Gate's Latino community began to grow in the 1970s. In the 1990s, South Gate homes became an enclave for immigrant Latin American families.
