Lakewood Homes
The city, located 17 miles from Los Angeles, features the largest ice skating rinks on the west coast, an equestrian center and a major shopping mall. Lakewood - Beginnings
After World War II,the Lakewood Park Company built 17,500 houses on about 3,500 acres of sugar beet fields just as war veterans and their families sought first homes. The city, though incorporated, continued contracting with Los Angeles County for road repair, water and sewer services, and fire protection.
The Lakewood Plan, which described how to retain local control while relying on existing county services, was adopted by many other communities in the United States. Lakewood real estate is studied by city planners as a ground-breaking tradition in American history. The city has 80,000 residents.
Recreation & Amenities
Lakewood hosts one of Southern California's largest regional malls, the Lakewood Center as well as Lakewood Marketplace, Pioneer Square and Lakewood Square. A restaurant row on Candlewood Avenue and numerous movie theaters create options for owners of Lakewood homes. The city has its own auto mall area and Wal-Mart.
Glacial Garden, a private facility with three ice rinks, ballet area and party rooms, sponsors the west's largest ice hockey tournaments annually. Mayfair Park and Bolivar Park each have public pools, with seasonal swimming instruction, water aerobics, diving, and lifesaving classes.
Rynerson Park, at Studebaker Road and Del Amo Boulevard, is north of the Lakewood Equestrian Center. The Equestrian Center has horse boarding and bridle paths.

The city of Lakewood is served by the Long Beach Unified School District, Paramount Unified School District, Bellflower Unified School District and the ABC Unified School District.
