Pico Rivera has recently gotten a second name: Latino Mayberry. CNN producers who developed a report about the city named it that after they saw all the signs of a typical American town, yet one where 92 percent of the community is Latino. Pico Rivera real estate listings have become more desirable with the recent addition of numerous businesses such as Walmart, Walgreens, Target and Starbucks. Pico Rivera property is bordered by Downey to the southwest and Santa Fe Springs on the southeast.
Pico Rivera is a small town of about 60,000 people located in Southeastern Los Angeles, located on the far southern edge of the Los Angeles basin. Near Long Beach and LAX, it is a popular home for many small families and middle-class people who want to live or work in and near Los Angeles without actually being in the city itself. Local real estate agents specialize in affordable single-family homes which tend to be larger and more luxurious than their Los Angeles counterparts, and the availability of larger homes for lower prices makes the area popular with young families. It is thus very ethnically and socially diverse, with almost 40% of the local population identifying as mixed-race or not among the traditionally described races.
Starting out as quiet farmland for most of its history, Pico Rivera became a formal town in the suburban boom of the 1950s. Taking advantage of the large amount of open park land, it became a home for residential and industrial development, and many immigrants and young families relocated there to take advantage of the employment opportunities. Seeking to stand out from the congested and tightly packed Los Angeles to the north, Pico Rivera was developed in a large, general manner, gently sprawling through the hills and over the plains instead of packing in tightly. This also left plenty of room for the Pico Rivera Municipal Golf Course, as well as many local parks, making the area decidedly green and pleasant in nature. Pico Rivera is also home to the famous Pico Rivera Sports Arena, which is home to Mexican and American style wrestling, rodeos, and many other outdoor sporting events.
The city council of Pico Rivera has sought to develop "cradle-to-grave" care by offering excellent educational and employment opportunities to the locals, as well as a modern and well-staffed senior center for when they retire. This starts with a modern and well funded public school system, which is supplemented by religious and secular private schools. These schools conduct outreach programs with local businesses to help apprenticeship and employment programs, as well as frequent trips to nearby Los Angeles to help locals take advantage of the many employment opportunities in that major city. This is backed up by a public library system with several branches. Once they have retired, the large senior center in Pico Rivera is intended to ensure that locals are properly cared for well into old age.
